In commemoration of this year’s World Environment Day (WED), and offering humanitarian service, as its culture, the Rotary Club of Abuja, Gwarimpa Central, on Friday June 5, 2026, carried out three projects at the LEA Primary School, 3rd Avenue, Gwarimpa, to impact the health and wellness of the pupils, teachers, and their environment.
The Club simultaneously commissioned a modernly constructed soak-away system, planted several trees, and donated sanitary pads to the girls, in expression of care, love, and service to humanity and preservation of the environment.
In her remarks, the President of Rotary Club Gwarimpa Central, Rtn. Ama Umoren, said that the three projects essentially address critical needs in sanitation, environmental sustainability, and menstrual hygiene, reflecting Rotary’s commitment to transforming life and strengthening communities through practical and sustainable intervention.
“We are here to dedicate a soak-away system, undertake tree planting, and distribute sanitary pads to young girls, three projects that address critical needs in sanitation, environmental sustainability, and menstrual hygiene.
“This project reflects Rotary’s commitment to transforming life and strengthening communities through practical and sustainable intervention. They also align with Rotary’s areas of focus, particularly disease prevention and treatment, water sanitation and hygiene, basic education and literacy, community economic development, and environmental protection. The soak-away system we commission today is more than a physical structure. It is an investment in public health, dignity, and a cleaner learning environment for pupils and teachers.
“While sanitation remains fundamental, proper sanitation remains fundamental to a healthy community, and we are proud to contribute to that objective. Our tree planting initiative symbolizes our commitment to environmental stewardship. Every tree planted today is a promise to future generations, a promise of cleaner air, a healthier ecosystem, and a greener planet. Rotary recognizes the protecting the environment.
“Our protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and we are determined to play our part. The distribution of pads to young girls is equally significant. Too many girls miss school or face unnecessary challenges because they lack access to menstrual hygiene products. By providing these materials and promoting awareness, we are helping to preserve their dignity, support their education, and encourage their confidence.”
Also speaking, the District Governor, Rotary Club D9127, Abuja, Dame Princess Joy Nky Okoro, represented by the Assistant District Governor, praised the President of Rotary Club Gwarimpa Central and her team for their commitment, resilience and dedication to service, noting that the projects reflect Rotary’s commitment to creating lasting impact through service.
She urged the school authorities and community members to ensure the proper maintenance and sustainability of the projects.
“I want to sincerely commend the President, Board members, Project Team, and every member of the club for choosing to act despite challenges and limitations. Your determination to complete these projects before the close of the Rotary year is truly commendable.
“I am proud of the Rotary Club of Abuja Gwarinpa Central and I encourage the club to continue to remain committed to impactful and sustainable community service.”
The teaching staff represented by Mr Omowale Lukman and Mrs Veronica Jatou, thanked the Rotary Club Gwarimpa for always supporting the School, recalling the donation of the sickbay earlier, even as they appealed for more support in the area of classroom seats.
Mrs Veronica, expressing her excitement, particularly appreciated the Club for the sanitary pads, describing it as a great relief on her, as the young girls always throng her office for assistance.
The Pupils were full of joy and gratitude while praying for God’s sustained blessings upon the Club and members.
