The Nigeria Police Force, which is as old as its colonial past, came into being on April 1, 1930 following the merging of regional police units precepitated by the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria in 1914. The 360,000 personnel under the operational and administrative command of the highest ranked officer, the Inspector General of Police appointed by the President, are responsible for internal security, ensure the maintenance and enforcement of law and order, the prevention of crime, community policing, among others. Operatives of the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force have uncovered a major drug trafficking network in Lagos, seizing suspected illicit drugs valued at over ₦7.8 billion during a sting operation in Mende, Maryland, reject a N500 million bribe.

The operation, carried out jointly by the Special Protection Unit and divisional detectives, led to the arrest of several suspects, including the alleged kingpin, 41-year-old Eke Henry Ifeanyi.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Olohundare Jimoh, disclosed that the suspects had been under surveillance for months before the raid on May 19th 2026.

He further revealed that the prime suspect allegedly offered a ₦500 million bribe to officers in a desperate attempt to stop the operation, but the offer was rejected and documented immediately.

The police say the success of the operation reflects the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu’s intelligence-driven and grassroots policing strategy focused on professionalism, integrity, and rapid response.

Exhibits recovered from the apartment have been documented for prosecution, while investigations continue to track down other members of the drug network.
