The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has thrown its full weight behind the ongoing opposition coalition efforts, declaring strong support for the recent summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement signed by its national publicity secretary, Ladipo Johnson on Sunday, the party noted that the vision of a rejuvenated Nigeria has brought the opposition together with a singular, unwavering focus.
The statement said, “We are no longer just individual parties; we are a unified movement representing the collective will of Nigerians who are tired of the status quo.
“This alignment is built on a foundation of shared values and a commitment to rescue our nation from the current economic hardships, proving that together, we possess the overwhelming mandate required to defeat the APC in the next general election.
“While we remain ready for a decisive victory, we are acutely aware of the systemic hurdles being erected to frustrate the democratic process.
“It is becoming increasingly clear that the Tinubu-led administration is wary of a level playing field.
“However, our message to the APC and the relevant institutions is simple: the Nigerian people will not accept anything less than a free, fair, and transparent contest.
“No amount of political maneuvering can stifle the desire for change. We are prepared to protect the sanctity of the ballot box and usher in a new era of competent leadership that truly serves the people” the party stated.
On a similar note, Benjamin Ozioko another NNPP leader described the gathering as a “timely and necessary intervention” aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and providing a united front against the ruling party.
He said that the party aligns with the resolutions reached at the meeting, particularly the proposal for opposition parties to rally around a single presidential candidate.
“This summit represents a turning point in Nigeria’s political history,” he said.
“For too long, the opposition has remained fragmented, but today we are seeing a genuine commitment to unity and collaboration.”
According to him, the NNPP believes that only a united opposition can effectively challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.
“We cannot continue to approach elections in isolation and expect different results.
“The decision to work towards a common candidate is not just strategic, it is necessary for national survival,” he added.
The party also echoed concerns raised at the summit regarding the state of democratic institutions, particularly the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in ensuring free and fair elections.
“We must restore confidence in the electoral process. Nigerians deserve an electoral system that is transparent, credible, and impartial,” the NNPP leader stated.
The NNPP leader commended the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for convening the summit and bringing together key opposition figures across party lines.
“This is not about individual ambition,” he noted. “It is about the future of Nigeria and the need to rescue the country from economic hardship, insecurity, and governance failures.”
The Ibadan summit is widely seen as a major step toward building a formidable opposition alliance capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape in the next general election.
