The 19th Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Al-Mustapha Haruna Jokolo, has commended Nigerian troops for their gallantry in repelling a fierce terrorist attack in Kukareta, describing their sacrifices as deserving of greater national appreciation and support.
Reacting to the successful operation, Jokolo said Nigerians must recognise the harsh realities faced by soldiers on the frontlines, noting that many operate under extremely difficult conditions, far away from their families, often without adequate rest or recreation.
He lamented that despite their sacrifices, troops are sometimes treated with “disrespect and contempt,” stressing that those who have had the privilege of serving alongside them understand their immense contributions to national security.
“Our hearts and minds are always with them,” the monarch said, adding that soldiers are not just defenders of the nation but “our children and grandchildren.”
He expressed deep concern over the emotional toll on troops and their families, especially when personnel are killed, wounded, or captured in the line of duty.
Jokolo, while congratulating the military, offered prayers for sustained victory, urging continued transparency in showcasing operational successes.
According to him, “show and tell” of achievements and helps build public confidence and strengthens national support for the armed forces.
His remarks followed a major operational success by troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), under Sector 2, who in the early hours of April 23, 2026, repelled a determined terrorist attack on Kukareta.
The attack, which began shortly after midnight and lasted until about 3:00 a.m., was met with a swift and coordinated response by vigilant troops.
In what military sources described as a deliberate offensive-defensive operation, the soldiers effectively contained the assault and forced the attackers into a disorderly retreat.
During the intense engagement, troops inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists, with at least 24 insurgents neutralised. Ongoing exploitation of the battlefield has also led to the recovery of a large cache of arms and ammunition.
Recovered items include 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), two PKT machine guns, three Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launchers, two mortar tubes, four hand grenades, 18 AK-47 magazines, and substantial quantities of belted 7.62mm ammunition for PKT systems.
