Former Governor of Kano State and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Engr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, is set to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday, in a move that could reshape the country’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Multiple party sources confirmed that arrangements have been concluded for Kwankwaso’s official defection, with a formal declaration expected in Abuja.
His planned move comes amid growing calls for opposition figures to unite under a common platform to challenge the ruling party during the forthcoming general elections.
A senior ADC official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the development as “a major political realignment that strengthens an already formidable opposition coalition.
“Kwankwaso is bringing in strong political structure, grassroots appeal, and a loyal political base. His entry into the ADC is not just symbolic; it strengthens the party’s national outlook,” the source said.
Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, has remained a central figure in northern politics, particularly in Kano State where he commands significant influence.
His anticipated defection follows weeks of consultations with political stakeholders and allies across the country.
The ADC has in recent months intensified efforts to position itself as a credible alternative platform, calling on Nigerians and political actors to join its ranks.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, recently urged “fence-sitters” to take a decisive stand, noting that “Nigeria needs a strong, credible, and organised opposition.”
It is believed that Kwankwaso’s move could trigger more defections, especially among politicians seeking a viable platform outside the dominant parties.
An ADC chieftain familiar with the negotiations said Monday’s event would “mark the beginning of a broader coalition-building process.”
“This is bigger than one individual. It is about building a united front capable of restoring confidence in governance and offering Nigerians a real choice,” the insider noted.
Efforts to get official confirmation from Kwankwaso’s camp were ongoing as of press time, but close associates hinted that the former governor is committed to aligning with a platform that prioritises internal democracy and national cohesion.
