The Nyesom Wike faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over an alleged plot to frustrate the party’s forthcoming national convention thorough a court injuction, even as the party leadership reaffirmed its commitment to proceed with the exercise as scheduled.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday in Abuja, the Publicity Secretary of National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) of the party, Hon. Jungudo Mohammed said recent moves by a rival group were aimed at destabilising the party and derailing preparations for the convention slated to hold at the National Stadium in Abuja from November 29 to 30, 2026.
The caretaker committee maintained that the leadership crisis rocking the party had already been settled by the courts, noting that both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal had affirmed its legitimacy as the recognised body to steer the affairs of the party.
“The judgments of the courts are clear and remain binding. We urge all members and the general public to disregard any contrary claims or misleading narratives,” the committee said.
It, however, expressed concern over what it described as fresh attempts by a group led by former Minister of Special Duties, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), to obtain a court injunction in Ibadan to halt the planned convention.
According to the NCWC, the move is particularly troubling given that several reconciliation efforts had been initiated by the party leadership but were allegedly ignored by the aggrieved faction.
The committee accused the group of abusing court processes in a bid to frustrate legitimate party activities, calling on judicial authorities to take note of such actions and safeguard the integrity of the legal system.
Despite the internal wrangling, the PDP leadership assured members that all arrangements for the national convention had been concluded, stressing that the exercise would be transparent, credible, and in line with the party’s constitution.
“We wish to categorically assure our members that the national convention will proceed as planned. The PDP remains united, strong, and determined,” the statement added.
Meanwhile the group inaugurated the National Convention Organising Committee chaired by former governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu on Saturday.
In his address during the inauguration ceremony the Caretaker Committee Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed admitted that the party’s journey has not been without challenges and extended hands of fellowship to all those working in the opposing camps.
He said, “For over a year, our party has navigated complex legal and judicial issues.
“Yet, through resilience, wisdom, and a shared commitment to unity, we have emerged not diminished, but refined.
“Today, the PDP stands once again as a beautiful bride, radiant with renewed political prospects and ready to reclaim its rightful place in the national space.
“The recent judgment of the Court of Appeal, widely regarded as a ‘no victor, no vanquished’ verdict, offers us a philosophical anchor. It reminds us that true triumph lies not in individual victories, but in collective survival and institutional continuity. It calls us to rise above divisions and embrace reconciliation as a higher virtue.
“Accordingly, we reaffirm our openness to broader engagement. We extend a hand of fellowship to all, firmly believing that genuine reconciliation will deepen unity, strengthen solidarity, and reposition our party for greater national service”.
He is acceptance speech, Dr. Ikpeazu said that the PDP needs honest reconciliation, rooted in truth, driven by sincerity, and sustained by mutual respect.
His words, “We must have the courage to listen to one another, the humility to admit where we went wrong and the strength to forgive, genuinely and completely.
“Let us, therefore, choose unity, not because it is easy, but because it is necessary.
“The Peoples Democratic Party is not just another political platform. It is a national institution. It is the vehicle through which millions of Nigerians still place their hopes for justice, inclusion, and good governance. We cannot afford to fail them.
“As we begin this important task, let us remember: positions will come and go, but legacy endures. Years from now, Nigerians will ask: when the PDP was tested, who stood for unity? Who stood for fairness? Who helped rebuild the party?”
