President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to the welfare of the military, as Nigeria on Thursday marked this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance and Celebration Day to honour the sacrifices of fallen heroes and celebrate the courage of serving personnel.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, President Tinubu, who is on official trip to the United Arab Emirates, paid tribute to the men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces who gave their lives in defence of the country, noting that their courage continues to sustain Nigeria’s freedom and peace.
“Their names might not always be remembered, but their courage sustains our freedom and peace,” the President said, stressing that a nation that forgets its fallen heroes risks losing its direction. He affirmed that Nigeria remains steadfast in remembering those who paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
The President also addressed the families of fallen soldiers, including widows, children, and loved ones, acknowledging the depth of their loss.
He described the sacrifices made by their relatives as acts of honour and patriotism that would never be forgotten by the Nigerian people.
Turning to serving personnel, President Tinubu commended officers and men across all branches of the Armed Forces for their dedication and professionalism.
He praised their roles on land, at sea, and in the air, noting the heavy responsibility they shoulder in protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, often while serving far from their families.
“As President and Commander-in-Chief, I reaffirm my commitment to the welfare and dignity of our Armed Forces,” Tinubu said, assuring that the government would continue to support them as they carry out their constitutional duties.
He concluded with prayers for the repose of fallen heroes, strength for serving personnel, and blessings for the nation.
Armed Forces Remembrance Day is observed annually to honour members of the military who lost their lives in the line of duty and to recognise the ongoing service of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
