Suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters have reportedly carried out a deadly ambush on a Nigerian Army convoy late Friday evening in Borno State, leaving several soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) dead.
The attackers, described as heavily armed and highly organized, executed what security sources believe was a meticulously planned assault, creating widespread panic in the area.
The insurgents reportedly abducted a serving Brigade-Commander (identity undisclosed) along with other military personnel.
If confirmed, this would mark the first time in Nigeria’s history that a serving General has been captured directly from the frontline by an extremist group, signaling a troubling escalation in the insurgency.
According to HumAngle, the ambush resulted in significant casualties, with the Brigade-Commander leading the convoy at the time of the attack.
As of Saturday morning, the Nigerian Army had not issued any official statement regarding the incident or the condition of the abducted officer.
The ambush was made amid growing concerns over worsening insecurity in the region, highlighted earlier in the week by Sen. Ali Ndume, who represents Borno-South.
Ndume condemned the increasing violence in his constituency, describing the situation “deeply worrisome” and unacceptable.
The senator stated that just days earlier, four farmers were brutally murdered by Boko Haram insurgents, while harvesting crops in Kwam village, near Dille in Askira-Uba Local Government Area.
He also said that last week, a church and other infrastructure in Pemi were set ablaze, and there were reports of another attack in the Shikarkir community of Chibok Local Government Area.
Ndume criticized the inability of security agencies to maintain consistent presence in remote communities, arguing that this lack of protection has emboldened insurgents to carry out repeated assaults without resistance.
