A new crisis is brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of its National Convention, as the faction led by Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has outlined six conditions that must be met to ensure a peaceful convention.
Following a meeting on Monday night, the group, which came by the name “Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party,” issued a communique reaffirming that leadership positions within the party should remain open, inclusive, and competitive, while ensuring regional balance in accordance with the PDP’s long-standing traditions.
In their communique , they demanded that to secure stability in the party: “We call on the National Working Committee to urgently conduct new, transparent, and inclusive congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, in accordance with court judgments.
“That a new and legitimate South-East Zonal Congress should be held.
“That the outcome of the valid and recognized South-South Congress held in Calabar, Cross River State, and acknowledged by the court, be respected.
“That the Ekiti State Local Government Areas Congress be conducted immediately, in compliance with the ongoing court judgment.
“On zoning of party offices, while we agree with the zoning committee’s recommendations, which was adopted by NEC that the status quo remains, we strongly believe that there should be no micro-zoning to maintain peace and stability within the party.
“The National Chairman of the party should remain in the North-Central in accordance with the zoning formula of the 2021 convention”.
They warned that “the forthcoming national convention may face difficulties if these conditions are not met.”
They argued that for the party to regain its status as the main opposition and become the true alternative for Nigerians, it must rise above narrow interests and embrace collective responsibility.
Present at the meeting were former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; ex-Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; former Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; his Enugu counterpart, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi; Chief Dan Orbih, the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, among others.
The minister had, during his media chat, held earlier in the day, threatened that readmitting Peter Obi into the party is a red line that must not be crossed.
The party’s leadership had slated its National Convention for Ibadan, Oyo State, on 15th and 16th November, 2025.
