‘Igba-Boi’: Apprenticeship system gets legal shield in Anambra

Anambra State has just flipped tradition on its head—turning the famous “Igba-Boi” apprenticeship model into law!

Jungle-Journalist.Com gathered that on August 28, 2025, the Anambra State House of Assembly passed the Igbo Apprenticeship Bill—popularly known as “Igba-Boi”—legitimizing the age-old business-mentorship system with the full force of law behind it.

The law gives legal recognition and regulation to the once-informal system where young people, under the guidance of seasoned “ogas,” learn the ropes of commerce and industry before establishing their own businesses.

This isn’t just lawmaking; it’s a next-level move to amplify entrepreneurship, curb youth unemployment, and formalize a community-powered institution. By putting Igba-Boi on statutory legs, Anambra is marrying heritage with modern standards—and building a blueprint other states may soon follow.

However, not everyone is cheering unconditionally. Community leader Dr. Uche Nworah flagged two concerns:

  1. Seven years may be too long—he suggests a leaner 4–5 year training schedule could be more realistic for today’s fast-moving world.
  2. Education-bar hurdle—he argues that insisting apprentices complete basic schooling may block grassroots talent. A better model might include trade learning with on-the-job certification or partnerships with vocational schools.

Anambra State has just turned culture into statute—legitimizing Igba-Boi with a modern regulatory twist and a legal safety net. The question now: Can they deliver a “win-win” framework that safeguards apprentices, supports ogas, and drives youth-powered economic growth? Only time—and smart implementation—will tell.
