Media Relations Consultant, Chief (Dr.) Fidel Onyeneke has again called for a special insurance scheme for Media practitioners in Nigeria, stressing that it will guarantee the security of their dependant relatives.
Dr. Onyeneke made the call in Owerri on Thursday, while reacting to the sudden death of the Vice-chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Imo State, Mr. Emma Odibo.
He stated that journalists who worked both in the government and private sectors need to be adequately insured by their employers, considering the numerous hazards associated with their duties.
Onyeneke regretted the situation where some employers toyed with the welfare of the Media professionals, in spite of the crucial roles they play towards the socio-political and economic development of the Society.
He described the demise of Mr. Odibo as a colossal set-back to the Media profession.
The former Special Adviser to Imo Governor on Public Orientation expressed shock that the renowned Editor could not live to reap the benefits of his robust contributions towards the enhancement of the journalism profession in the Southeast of the Nation.
Onyeneke,a two- term State Chairman of NUJ in Imo, and a National Trustee, recalled that late Odibo joined hands with some early Publishers in Imo to ensure the advent and emergence of credible private newspapers in the eastern part of Nigeria
