Following breakdown of talks with the federal government over the national minimum wage negotiations and reversal of the increases in electricity tariff, the Organised Labour Friday announced the commencement of indefinite nationwide strike from Monday, June 3, 2024.
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, who made the announcement at a press conference at the Labour House, Abuja, said that “the strike would commence by 12 mid-night of Sunday and will be total”.
This followed expression of sadness over the refusal of the federal government to take its June 1st ultimatum serious to conclude negotiations on a new national minimum wage and reversal of the over 300 percent hike in electricity tariff.
During the briefing, leaders of the NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) pleaded with Nigerians to be patient with them and expressed regret over the inconveniences the strike may cause Nigerians.
“We tender apologies for the inconveniences, but we are commitment to pursuing this cause to its conclusion,” the Labour leaders stated.
The Organised Labour had warned that they would be forced to declare a nationwide strike from Monday if the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage failed to meet the expectations of Labour.
