The Federal government has launched a three approach of deploying 2,220 mining marshals, introducing advanced technologies, and embarking on a mass sensitization campaign to tackle illegal mining.
The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake said the efforts are aimed at stamping out illegal mining in parts of the country.
He spoke at the Ministerial Sectoral Update in Abuja to mark the one-year anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“The Mining Marshals, comprising 2,220 personnel, have already brought relief to investors who were previously helpless against illegal miners.
“With improved equipment and armor, the Marshals will expand their operations, combating illegal mining and encouraging legal operators to resume activities.
“The establishment of the Marshals has also enabled Mines Surveillance teams to focus on intelligence gathering, tracking, and prosecuting illegal miners. To date, 133 individuals are facing prosecution for illegal mining in various states,” the minister said.
Dr. Alake disclosed that government has offered illegal miners an honorable option of joining co-operatives and become legitimate miners, adding that since September 2023, 152 new co-operatives have been registered, creating 70,650 jobs for youths.
“The ministry aims to expand this initiative, collaborating with federal and state agencies to formalize artisanal mining and promote a mass co-operative movement.”
Also, the Minister noted that the 2023 Revised Guidelines for Community Development Agreements have led to increased approvals, improving relationships between mining operators and host communities, and reducing conflicts.
He disclosed that the Ministry has prioritized socio-economic development in mining communities, encouraging community development agreements to address concerns on compensation, employment, and sustainable community programmes.
“This comprehensive approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to restoring order in the mining sector, promoting legal operations, and ensuring sustainable development for the benefit of all stakeholders.”
