Aftermath of the sentencing of transgender, Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to six months in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos for Naira mutilation, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has stated that Bobrisky would be housed in the male section of its facility, adding that he should not be afraid of sexual molestation.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court found Bobrisky guilty of Naira abuse, leading to his sentencing on Friday.

The NCoS stated that Okuneye should not entertain any fears during the period of his incarceration because officers and men of the Service will give him adequate protection.

Bobrisky’s conviction had sparked vigorous debate on the social media, with some people questioning where he will be housed among other issues there to. 

But the NCoS clarified that Bobrisky would serve his term in the male section of its custodial facility, according to standard procedure, having been declared a male by the court.

Bobrisky is known for his open discussion of gender transition online, and had stated his identity as male during court proceedings, which led to the decision to sentence him as male and to place him in a male-designated facility.

“Since he admitted to being a male in court, then we have to abide by what was submitted in court.

“He shouldn’t be afraid of sexual assault from other male inmates because our men can give him protection,” a spokesperson for the correctional service in Lagos said.
