Governors elected under the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and his predecessor Nyesom Wike to sheath their swords as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu finds an amicable way of resolving the crises.
This is even as the governors expressed confidence on the judiciary but further expressed worry that conflicting judgements were being issued by different courts especially in election petitions cases.
The governors took the position in a communique read by Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed at the end of their meeting that took place on Tuesday evening at the Oyo State governors lodge, Asokoro, Abuja.
The governors said that the president should explore all avenues to stem the recent free fall of the Naira.
They said that the opposition party will continue to play it’s role as a viable party and keep the present government on it’s toes.
The resolutions reached by the governors runs thus:
“The meeting noted the recent judgement of the Supreme Court on the 2023 Presidential Election and believes that this brings an end to the Presidential election cycle as there must be an end to litigation. As a Forum, we believe and re-state our faith and confidence in the judiciary to do justice in political and other cases before the Courts. We are concerned that while the Supreme Court has laid down precedents on pre-election issues, PDP candidates in Plateau State are being disqualified on the same grounds. We urge the judiciary at the apex level to ensure that our jurisprudence is not distorted. We remain vigilant in the struggle for democracy and good governance in the country.
“The meeting vowed to reposition and strengthen PDP as a viable opposition political party ready and willing to play its role as the vanguard of the Nigerian people for democracy, good governance and accountability.
“The PDP Governors were alarmed at the recent developments in Rivers State and welcomes the intervention of Mr. President to bring the crises to an end. The meeting urged all parties to the Rivers State crises to sheath their sword and resort to peaceful means of resolution. The Forum further offers its platform for a quick and just containment of the issues involved.
“On the national economy, the meeting urgently requested the patriotic intervention of the Federal Government to stabilize the Naira, control inflation, stem the unemployment crises, and bring more succour to Nigerians”.
Recall that governor Fubura recently fell out of the favour of his boss and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike less than six months after the governor was sworn in. The situation so much detoriated that the governor was tear gassed and threatened with impeachment notice while part of the state assembly complex was set ablaise.
The governors fought back by removing from office all those who owe their allegiance to Wike including the Chief Justice of the State, Chief of Staff, Speaker of the State Assembly, All elected local government chairmen, his police orderly and several political office holders.
Those in attendance were: Gov. Bala Mohammed – Chairman; Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State – Vice Chairman.
Others are: Gov. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri – Adamawa State; Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori – Delta State and Deputy Gov. Ifeanyi Ossai – Enugu State; Gov. Ademola Adeleke – Osun State.
Others include: Gov. Seyi Makinde – Oyo State; Gov. Caleb Mutfwang – Plateau State; Gov. Godwin Obaseki- Edo State; Gov. Kefas Agbu – Taraba State and Gov. Dauda Lawal – Zamfara State.
