*Burying victims without the families’ knowledge is crime against God and humanity, analysts say
The nation’s social media have reached pitch effervescent following the emergence of approval by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, for which the state’s public procurement agency, engaged the service of Messrs Tos Funeral Ltd, a private firm, for the mass burial of 103 persons said to be victims of the October 20, 2020 #EndSARS protests.
According to the letter from the procurement agency, circulating all over the places, request were made for fund for the mass burial of at least 103 protesters ‘killed’ by joint forces of the Nigerian security forces during the October 20, 2020 protest against nationwide police brutality on citizens tagged #EndSARS, which took place across the country, but with the epi centre of the protest at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.
The letter dated July 19 by the public procurement agency, stated that the services of Messrs Tos Funeral Ltd, a private firm, has been engaged for the mass burial.
It came on the joint state government’s letter and PPA headed paper with reference number LA/PPA/NO OBJ/VOL. 22/213.
The letter stated that the state government engaged the firm at the cost of N61,285,000 to bury 103 bodies already identified to be victims of the protest.
The conditions set for the contract and relevant items to be supplied, deductions, fees and taxes to be paid, were clearly stated on the letter.
When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Gboyega Akosile, chose to be taciturn, saying however that the government will make its responses known soon.
On her part, popular Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu in a Tweet Sunday wondered if the reported mass burial is true and not false news.
The political analyst described the reported planned mass burial as impunity, adding that the report beats her imagination.
She wrote: “This is not some fake news? Lord have mercy. The impunity of this all beats my imagination. #EndSars Massacre.”
Aondoaka Michael said he was agast that a government being led by human beings that swore with the blood of their ancestors that nobody was killed inspite of the Panel report are coming up now to bury the victims.
He expressed serious worry that the state government never considered it appropriate to contact the victims’ families before burying them.
Abubakar Olajide, a socialite, said Nigeria needs prayers and restitution for feeling happy killing own citizens in cold blood and denying same.
