The Institute for Governance and Leadership Studies in Africa (IGLSA) and Lions Club International have concluded plans to build world-class Eye Care Hospital, Diabetes Research Center in Nigeria.
The hospital, billed to be cited in Abuja, the nation’s capital, is estimated to cost N3.5 billion, to compliment existing public infrastructure for such ailments, will address the health care needs of over 5.38 million Nigerians estimated to be experiencing various degrees of eye care problems.
Already, research findings shows that an estimated 1.3 million Nigerians above 40 years are currently blind, while 4.25 million other adults are partially blind.
It is equally estimated that the prevalence level at the state level, particularly in the Northen parts of the country is higher.
A recent survey also shows that a major cause is cataract and glaucoma, accounting for about 80 per cent of blindness.
Similarly, a recent investigation shows that the ratio of eye services in relation to Nigeria’s increasing population is grossly inadequate, hence the intervention by Lions Club to establish the Eye Hospital and Diabetic Researfh Center to scale up humanitarian activities of body in Nigeria.
According to Dr. Lanre Adebayo, Project Director for the programme, the partnership of the Club and IGLSA aim at constructing “a multi-purpose facility to undertake research in the treatment of diabetes and eye diseases.
“It is a joint project of the Lions Club International and District 404 of the local chapter, to build the structures, while the international chapter will provide theblatest state-of-the-art equipment for the Center and ensure regular visitations by globally-rated experts”.
He added that they plan to embark on fund raising to achieve the purpose.
