The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, has announced a strategic alliance between the party and Team New Nigeria (TNN), describing it as a critical step toward strengthening Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the SDP/TNN summit in Kano, Gombe said the collaboration represents a historic moment reminiscent of the formation of the Northern Elements Progressive Union in 1950, which he described as the first political party in Northern Nigeria.
He noted that Kano has long served as a hub for progressive political movements, recalling how eight ideologues gathered in the city to establish NEPU as an anti-colonial and anti-feudal platform. According to him, the coming together of the SDP and TNN reflects a similar ideological alignment aimed at promoting social justice, equality, and economic prosperity.
“This is not a coincidence but a continuation of history,” Gombe said. “Today, social democrats and progressive elements are uniting once again in Kano to advance democratic ideals and offer Nigerians a credible alternative.”
The SDP chairman explained that the alliance followed a series of consultations and political realignments, particularly after TNN’s attempt to secure registration as a political party with the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) was not successful.
He said TNN members, recognizing shared values with the SDP, opted to merge with the party to pursue common goals, including good governance, security, social inclusion, and economic opportunities for citizens.
Gombe assured TNN members of equal opportunities within the SDP, emphasizing that the party is committed to inclusiveness as it prepares for the next electoral cycle.
He, however, expressed concern over Nigeria’s current state, lamenting that nearly three decades of democratic governance have not delivered the expected political and economic progress.
“Our internal security is deteriorating, our economy is in crisis, and public trust in governance is waning,” he said. “Our youths, who should be our greatest assets, are leaving the country in record numbers in search of better opportunities.”
He described the SDP-TNN alliance as timely, saying it aims to “rescue and reposition” the country by restoring hope and confidence in the democratic process.
The SDP chairman also acknowledged key figures who facilitated the merger, including the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, for his efforts in strengthening the partnership.
He further commended TNN leadership, particularly its president, Modibbo Yakubun Farakwai, for demonstrating patriotism and commitment to national development.
Gombe concluded by urging party members and stakeholders to remain united and focused on the shared objective of building a more inclusive and prosperous Nigeria.
