The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the last general elections, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Also, the Secretary of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is also a son of former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
The former Governor of Kano State and Minister of Defence, registered with the party and received his membership card on Monday at Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Bompai, Kano.
Present at the event were ADC National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, who was a former Senate President; a former Sokoto State Governor, Sen. Aminu Tambuwal; a former Minister of Transportation, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi; a former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi; Sen. Dino Melaye; and a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, among others.
Kwankwaso had announced his resignation from the NNPP on Sunday, citing the need for political realignment.
On his part, Mustapha, in a statement on Monday on his Facebook page, Mustapha said that his decision to leave the party was carefully considered and not taken lightly.
The letter reads: “I want to inform general public that as of today, I have officially resigned my membership from the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP”.
He announced that he is currently in the process of joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the move as the beginning of a new chapter in his political journey.
Meanwhile, Keankeaso, address party members said: “For you to understand what I’m talking about, from today I will not allow anybody to pass the gates of my house without ADC and INEC registered cards; therefore, go out and ensure that you register accurately with our party and INEC”.
The National Chairman of ADC, Sen. David Mark, in his speech, said the day marked a defining moment in the history of the nation’s democracy, adding that it marked a special day in the journey to make Nigeria a better country and a more united nation.
“We stand together today, not just as one political party but as people united to make our dear country, Nigeria, a better nation. Nigeria can be better and must work better for all Nigerians.”
Mark explained the value Kwankwaso was bringing in his welcome, along with millions of his supporters, to the ADC. He said they have come together in unity of purpose, conviction and vision.
“Your coming to ADC is not merely a political statement; it is a deliberate response to the clarion call by well-meaning Nigerians for all opposition leaders to be united and present a common front to protect our democracy.”
