Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sharply criticised the Federal Government following Nigeria’s ranking in the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026, accusing the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to protect citizens amid worsening insecurity.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the opposition party described the government as “dancing on blood” while Nigerians continue to face deadly attacks and abductions across the country.
Citing the report released by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the PDP noted that Nigeria was ranked fourth globally in terms of the impact of terrorism, with the country among five nations responsible for nearly 70 per cent of terrorism-related deaths worldwide.
“The just-released Global Terrorism Index 2026… indicates that our country, under the leadership of the APC-led Government, has infamously earned a fourth position in the world on the impact of terrorism survey,” the statement read.
It added, “Nigeria and four other countries accounted for almost seventy percent of deaths from terrorism. Nigeria also had one of the two largest increases in deaths from terrorism.”
The party said the findings reflect the daily reality faced by many Nigerians, stressing that insecurity has reached alarming levels under the current administration.
“This global report aligns with the daily lived reality of Nigerians, who are now more insecure than they have ever been in this Fourth Republic,” the PDP stated.
The opposition further alleged that insecurity has become deeply entrenched, adding, “In fact, under President Tinubu’s watch, insecurity has not just become very lucrative, it has attained a trillion-naira economy status.”
Calling for urgent action, the PDP urged the President and security agencies to shift from what it described as reactive responses to a more comprehensive and proactive strategy.
“We call on the President and the entire security hierarchy to stop performing reactive responses that have defined post-attack communications and rather adopt a whole-of-society approach towards solving insecurity,” the statement said.
The party also recommended policies aimed at both immediate and long-term peace, noting that authorities must “deliver negative peace (cessation of attacks and incidents) immediately and providing the basis for positive peace (voluntary and unforced harmonious co-existence).”
Reiterating its position, the PDP emphasised that safeguarding lives and property remains the fundamental responsibility of government.
“It needs reminding that the primary duty of every Government is the protection of lives and property—a task that this administration has consistently failed glaringly,” it added.
The party concluded by urging President Tinubu to leverage his political experience to address the security crisis, warning that citizens are growing increasingly frustrated.
“We appeal to the President to deploy his famed political ‘mastery’ to provide a solution to the security of lives and property. Nigerians are tired of being killed for no reason.”
