Das after the Nigeria Police denied the abduction of Christian worshipers in Kaduna State, the list of the victims has emerged and the Police eventually recanted their statement.
Recall that the incident occurred when bandits raided some churches in Kurmin Wali, a remote community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Sunday.
Both the Police and the Kaduna State Government had vehemently insisted that no such thing happened, even as victim’s family and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), maintained there were kidnappings.
The locals after the dispute provided a list of the victims, a development that made the police recant on their statements, confirming the abductions.
The Kaduna State Police Command had disputed the report, tagging it as fake news.
The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Muhammad Rabiu, who addressed journalists shortly after a security meeting at the Government House on Monday, had challenged those making the claims to provide names and details of the victims.
However, in an update on Tuesday night, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement, he admitted that there were attacks and abductions on the community.
According to the FPRO, the comments made by the Commissioner of Police “were intended to prevent unnecessary panic while facts were being confirmed.
“Those remarks, which have since been widely misinterpreted, were not a denial of the incident, but a measured response pending confirmation of details from the field, including the identities and number of those affected.
“Subsequent verification from operational units and intelligence sources has confirmed that the incident did occur.
“The Nigeria Police Force therefore activated coordinated security operations, working closely with other security agencies, with a clear focus on locating and safely rescuing the victims and restoring calm to the area”, the statement added.
Nigerians have nonetheless condemned the Commissioner of Police and the Local Government Chairman, who joined the CP to deny and rain abuses on CAN and the church for crying out over the incident.
The commentators insisted that improper orientation on duties and roles by the Police Management Team before deployment and lack of expectation by the constituents as their leader pushed the local government chairman take sides with what was obviously untrue narrative by the police.
