In one of the most dramatic demonstrations of joint military coordination in recent months, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Thursday executed a rapid-response airstrike that prevented what could have been a devastating loss of personnel during an ISWAP ambush in the restive Damboa–Biu axis of Borno State.
The incident unfolded during a routine clearance operation when troops, led by a Brigadier General, unknowingly advanced into a booby-trapped route.
What began as an isolated exchange of gunfire quickly escalated into a well-coordinated terrorist onslaught, as ISWAP fighters emerged in waves from multiple directions.
*A sudden ambush, a tactical withdrawal
According to security sources, the intensity of the attack forced the Brigade Commander to order a tactical withdrawal to avoid being encircled.
But with the insurgents’ numbers swelling and the threat of casualties rising, the commander sent out a distress call requesting immediate air support.
This call would prove decisive.
*Air power arrives in minutes
NAF platforms already airborne on separate missions were rapidly diverted to the ambush site.
What followed was a textbook example of air–ground synergy: aircraft swooped in with precision, delivering suppressive fire that halted the advancing terrorists and created a safe corridor for troops and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Defence intelligence sources disclosed that the air interdiction neutralised “scores” of ISWAP fighters, forcing the remaining terrorists to scatter into surrounding bushes.
*Lives saved, ambush neutralised
The swift intervention is credited with saving the Brigade Commander, his troops, and the accompanying CJTF personnel from what could have been a catastrophic outcome.
Military authorities confirmed that casualties on the government side were minimal—an outcome attributed directly to timely air support.
*Airspace now under tight surveillance
In the aftermath of the ambush, NAF aircraft continue to dominate the airspace across the Damboa–Biu corridor, conducting round-the-clock surveillance to prevent further insurgent movements or renewed ambush attempts.
*A testament to evolving joint operations
Security analysts say the operation highlights a renewed emphasis on seamless coordination between ground forces and air assets in the North-East theatre.
In an environment where insurgent groups rely heavily on surprise attacks and mobility, the ability to call in real-time air support remains a game-changing asset.
For frontline troops who often operate in unpredictable terrain, Thursday’s rescue mission reinforces a growing confidence in the military’s evolving strategy: one built on rapid communication, precision air power, and unified action.
