The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna, a renowned consultant psychiatrist and academic at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, as its new national president.

Prof. Piwuna’s emergence was announced during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.

He succeeds Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, who led the union through a period marked by prolonged strikes and tense negotiations with the Federal Government.

Before his election, Prof. Piwuna served as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos and was also a key member of ASUU’s National Executive Council.

In the tightly contested race, he defeated Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
