The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have opened discussions on strengthening Nigeria’s emergency communications infrastructure and enhancing nationwide early warning systems.
At a meeting held at the NCC headquarters in Abuja, Wednesday, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, along with the Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Zubaida Umar, discussed on ways to collaborate for developing a National Emergency Telecommunications Response Plan.
The initiative aims to bolster the country’s disaster readiness through technology-driven solutions, especially in light of increasing climate-related risks and insecurity.
“This partnership will be pivotal to establishing a resilient national emergency communication framework that ensures timely, accurate, and coordinated responses during crises,” said Maida.
Nigeria’s emergency response efforts have been hampered by fragmented communication systems, particularly in remote areas with poor network coverage.
The proposed plan seeks to address these gaps by leveraging the NCC’s regulatory capacity and the mobile industry’s infrastructure to improve the speed and reach of emergency alerts and rescue coordination.
The initiative aligns with global best practices where governments integrate telecoms and disaster management to create technology-powered early warning platforms, capable of alerting citizens within minutes.
The two agencies disclosed their intention to co-develop a standardised national response framework, which will include telecommunications protocols for emergency alerts, real-time disaster tracking, and public safety communications.
“NEMA is focused on using innovation to deliver more effective disaster response. By working with the NCC, we can scale our early warning systems and save lives during emergencies,” said it’s Director-General, Umar.
The collaboration was made public as Nigeria ramps up investments in National Emergency Communication Centres (ECCs), which are expected to play pivotal roles in the proposed plan.
