*Nothing to hide, Yakubu assures

Following its dissatisfaction with the outcome of the presidential election, the legal team of the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, were at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in Abuja Monday afternoon to inspect the balloting materials.

The meeting with the INEC officials, which held at the Commission’s national headquarters, was to prepare the ground for the commencment of the process of inspection of both hardcopy and proof of BVAS transmission of the resukts of the February 25 presidential election, as stipulated in the Electoral Act and Guidelines for Electoral Officers.

The team, which comprise of about 60 lawyers, was led by Dr, Livy Uzoukwu. 

On its part, INEC assured that it will provide all the documents the party requested for the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.

The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, gave the assurance when at the meeting to discuss modalities for obtaining the documents.

Yakubu insisted the commission has nothing to hide, adding that Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) at the state level would also make available necessary documents to the party speedily.

He said: “INEC has nothing to hide. Documents available at the HQ will be given immediately. 

“We are meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners today and we will discuss how other documents at the state level could also be made available to you speedily.”

INEC had come under criticisms for its failure to upload the polling unit results of the presidential election across the federation to its Results Viewing Portal on election day.

Recall also that collation agents of the LP, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some other parties had walked out from the National Collation Centre in Abuja protesting against the collation and results announced by the commission.
