Chairman, Board of Trustees, Association of Point of Sales Users in Nigeria (APOSUN), Ibrahim Abdullahi said all the 47 POS operators, who were arrested recently by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in the FCT, are not registered members of the association.
Abdullahi, who disclosed this in an interview with New National Star in Abuja, frowned that many illegal and unregistered POS operators operate their business in parts of the country, even as he cautioned Nigerians against patronizing such operators.
He revealed that the association has been sensitising POS operators in the country to get registered with the association, adding, however, that many of them have refused to identify with the association.
The board of trustees chairman said that the association would set up a taskforce to checkmate the activities of illegal and unregistered operators in the country.
He disclosed that at the moment, there are less than one million registered members of the association nationwide, while in the FCT there are just about 200 operators who are registered members of the association, adding that even by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) figure, there about 1.4million POS terminals across the country.
Recall that the administration recently arrested 47 POS operators for operating in unapproved locations in parts of the territory.
Abdullahi, however, commended the administration for ensuring security of POS operation in the territory, but expressed disappointment that the FCTA did not involve or inform the association before embarking on the arrest of the operators.
He maintained that if the association was part of the arrest and clampdown, the exercise could have been easier for the administration.
He noted that the introduction of POS operation has not only provided employment opportunities for many youths in the country, but has also reduced the pressure in the banking halls.
