Japan stunned Germany with a late comeback in their World Cup opener at the Khalifa International Stadium.

Japan had never previously beaten the former World champions.

The Asians had an early goal from Daizen Maeda ruled out for offside.

Germany were awarded a penalty in the 33rd minute following goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda clumsy challenge on David Raum.

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan colly slotted home the penalty.

Japan used their lightning quick attack to score twice late on.

Substitute Ritsu Doan turned home from close range on 75 minutes.

Takuma Asano smuggled the ball home on a tight angle seven minutes from time.
