*As thousands throng Unity Fountain, rally for Peter Obi
Tens of thousands of supporters of thr presidential candidate of thr Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, Saturday staged a peaceful rally in Abuja.
The pro-Obi and his running mate, Sen. Yusuf Datti supporters, marched peacefully from the Unity Fountain to the Moshood Abiola National Stadium along the Airport Road, chanting pro-Obi and Labour Party songs, amid heavy security.
Providing security for the pro-Obi supporters were a detachment of officers of the Nigeria Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The OBIDatti supporters had last week staged peaceful rallies in Ebonyi, Plateau, Kano and Oyo states as well as some other states across the country.
61-year-old Peter Obi is a former governor of Anambra state, former running mate to Atiku Abubakar and is contesting the 2023 presidential election alongside top contenders like Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The excited participants at the rally cut across all strata of people, including men and women, elderly and the youth, public and civil servants, traders, artisans and students.
They happily danced about as they made the approximately five kilometer walk to the National Stadium, saying they are tired of politicians who have been taking Nigerians for granted since 1999.
They said they will vote for Obi in next year’s presidential election, not based on religion, party, tribe or any other primordial consideration, but on the conviction that he would rescue Nigeria from the clutches of unconscionable politicians, who have inflicted pain and misery on Nigerians.
They also pooh-poohed politicians who say Peter Obi has no political structure, stressing that “we are his structure; we will not always those money bags rig the next election.”
