The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ademola Adeleke, winner of the Osun State Governorship Election held on Saturday, July 16, 2022.
Adeleke defeated other candidates including the incumbent Governor Adegboyega Isiaka Oyeyola of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
He polled 403,371 votes to send Governor Oyetola who polled 375,027 votes packing from the Government House.
Adeleke, won in 17 local government areas while incumbent Governor Isiaka Adegboyega Oyetola, candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, got 13.
Declaring the PDP candidate Governot-Elect, the Returning Officer of the election, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, said:
“I declare that Adeleke Ademola Jackson Nurudeen of PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and he is returned elected.”
Kehinde Atanda of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) came third with 10,104 votes.
A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Lasun Yusuf, performed abysmally as he only managed to poll 2,729 votes.
The governor-elect had lost the 2018 election to Governor Adegboyega Oyetola but returned four years later to unseat the his rival, an incumbent, who garnered 375,027 votes.
Although 15 political parties partook in the exercise, it was clearly a two horse race between the PDP and APC.
The Osun poll is the last off-cycle election before the 2023 general election and so an avenue for leading parties to test their might ahead of next year’s elections.
At the last off-cycle election in Ekiti State, APC won, while Saturday’s in Osun was picked by the PDP rekindling old rivalry of AD/PDP in the South-West zone.
Now PDP controlls two states in the zone, Oyo and Osun, while APC controlls the remaining four states.
