Inspire of claims by the Nigerian military of seriously degrading insurgents in all parts of the country particularly in the North-East, armed men suspected to be members of the Islamic State West African Province (ISWAP) Wednesday night overran a military base in Borno State.

It was learnt that the insurgents attacked the troops at Ajire village in Mafa Local Government Area around 9 pm, forcing the soldiers to flee without serious exchange of fire.

The source revealed that about 80 soldiers at the base ran away, leaving behind some weapons and personal belongings including handsets, which were carted away by the insurgents.

The soldiers reportedly failed to withstand the insurgents due to a lack of ammunition and fighting equipment.

“The terrorists overpowered the Nigerian troops who were left with few ammunitions and without support equipment such as RPG, AA and MG,” the source said.

Residents said the insurgents who took over Ajire village between 9pm on Wednesday and 4am on Thursday did not attack civilians but were seen carting away valuables from the military camps (Courtesy: Emergency Digest).
